Description
The nine flower gardens of La Chatonnière which encircle the castle like a necklace around a pretty woman's face.
South of the castle, in a room of greenery, towered over by tall lindens and cone shaped yew trees, The Elegance Garden (created in 1996) shows itself subtly, decorated with statues, urns, groves and view points. It has an icehouse, labyrinths and flower beds which change with the seasons: tulips in April, lilies in May, dahlias in Summer and cyclamen in the fall.
At the heart of the manor in a space marked by cypresses, surrounding squares of lawn and boxwood, decorated with royal urns, The Silence Garden ( 1997) is at the same time gracious and severe, with an old well and dovecote.
To the west, at the foot of medieval towers, around a pool, The Senses Garden (1997) is in the center of a design of boxwood. Covered with 150 varieties of multicolored perennials, these concentric flower beds are framed by a cloud of white rose trees. Each of the senses will profit: for the eyes: the shimmering colors; for the hearing: the warbling of birds and the song of the cicadas; for the touch: the velvet of petals and for the smell: the delicacy of perfumes and the aroma of medicinal plants.
Beside it, The Intelligence Garden ( 1998) framed by pergolas covered with red roses, is bedecked with clever arabesques. Four red and blue squares are framed by pergolas and walls, where clematis and roses are intertwined.
Beside the cliff, behind the castle, which it dominates and makes a halo, is The Magic Crescent (1999) carpeted by California poppies. Its thousand flame-colored rosebushes are crowned by a trellis, where golden roses climb.
Hidden away, protected from the north winds by a slope of a thousand saffron-colored rosebushes, scented and secret, is The Abundance Garden (2000) with kitchen garden plants within scuptured box hedges. Strawberries, scallions, eggplant, basil, chives, parsley, tomatoes, celery, red and white cabbages, Swiss chard and red peppers are planted in the graceful design of a rose-leaf, whose veins are the paths.
The Exuberance Garden ( 2001) is embellished by an ocean of wild flowers scattered over 7 hectares. The red and blue "waves" made by the wind, ripple through the valley.
Inspired by Polyphilus'dream, The Romance Garden ( 2002) is a necklace of 30 round rooms of greenery, in its finery of climbing roses which form 30 iridescent domes. Their fragile walls are live woven willows. At the center is a hidden labyrinth whose design is of Viking origin.
The last, The Sciences Garden ( born 2003), surrounded by live woven willows is a sweet-smelling chessboard made of 80 squares each 2 x 2 metres of which 40 are green lawns and 40 are medicinal plants: hyssop, rosemary, sage, thyme, melissa balm, verbena, angelica, perennial celery, horse-radish, arnica, absinth, artemisia, tarragon, mint, fennel, licorice, lavender, chervil, myrtle, marjoram, rhubarb, rue, savory, and more.....
