Park and Garden Of the Abbey Of Royaumont
Description
The abbey today consists of a close-knit and imposing group of buildings laid out around the cloister. At the far end of the grounds, which are criss-crossed with canals, the visitor will discover, to the left, the latrine building with a canal running beneath it, along with the monks' building from which a parlour-passage leads to the cloister. Facing this to the west is the lay brothers' building, separated from the gallery of the cloister by a lane. To the north can be found the spectacular ruins of the church, while to the south one can admire the monks' refectory and the kitchens. Abutting the church is the sacristy, next to which was the former chapter room, where an exhibition room and a library can now be found. Finally, two yards opened to the public allow visitors to discover the south flank of the abbey.
Medieval garden :
"Colored plants, plants colors", such is the name of this garden whose plants were cultivated in the centuries preceding the appearance of chemical coloration in the 19th century. This new horticultural collection evokes the oftentime surprising techniques of color production: the garden demonstrates that chemicals seldom relate to the plant's own color. One ponders the social relation of color and symbolism; as the historian Michel Pastoureau reminds us, "it is society that produces color, that gives it its definition and its feeling, that constructs its codes and values, and that organizes its practices and determines its stakes". The garden also displays fibrous plants, such as flax, hemp, and nettle. The garden's architecture is rooted in the rare knowledge we possess of the gardens of the Middle Ages and is also embellished by various ornemental elements for the pleasure of the stroller.
