Description
The Botanical Garden of the Col de Saverne was created in 1931 by a group of local naturalists from the Saverne area - among vhom Emile Walter (1873-1953).
This garden of 2,3 hectares is situated in a loop formed by the RN 4 as in rises to the Col de Saverne, and is sited on the borders of the Vosges mountains on sandstone (principal conglomerate) with traces of limestone. Its continental climate - annual mean rainfall 800-900 mm is tempered by the forest-clad environnement.
The plants are in their natural surroundings, and space apart in plots. A large number of species rare to the Alsace and the Vosges grow in the Botanical Garden. We may also find plants from different parts of the world, an arboretum, a small peat bog, and a pont with aquatic flowers.
At the end of the garden is a large meadow with a mini reserve - an untouched area which is experimentally being reforsted with pines, horn - beams and birches. Comprising 20 or so different species the garden has the greatest variety of native orchids of any other in France.
